Sheena
Tuesday & Thursday Day Coordinator & Feeder
Sheena has been a volunteer with RDA Ryde for about 15 years doing tasks such as horse care, leading a horse or side walking in classes plus a Friday Feeder.
Sheena started back in the days when RDA Ryde was located at Putney in the grounds of the Royal Rehabilitation hospital. She says her initial motivation was selfish due to a love of horses but then quickly saw the benefit and joy therapy horse-riding brought to the riders.
Those days in Putney were far less luxurious than our new home at Marsfield Park.
The horses had old bath tubs that frequently needed scooping out compared to the fancy automatic water feeders now and the volunteers had a rattly old tin shed that served as a meeting room, tack room and equipment storage. There was no air conditioning. There was no covered arena like at Marsfield, so classes at the old site on the side of a hill were very weather dependent.
However the role of volunteer has not changed.
Sheena says that over her time with RDA Ryde she has met some lovely people who are friendly, caring and supportive that all work hard but still have time for lots of laughs. She loves returning home at the end of a session tired but feeling very rewarded for the achievements our riders have accomplished.
